How to get Creative with your Elf on the Shelf!

Happy December!  This month is when our household goes into full-on Christmas mode frenzy!  And December 1st is when Crystal, our Elf on the Shelf makes her official Christmas appearance.

This is how Crystal appeared this morning to the delight of my two daughters.

Im back 2014 (800x600)

Excuse the messy counter but it was early morning school rush when I took the photo this morning!

Last year was our first Christmas with an Elf on the Shelf and I went crazy trying to be creative as to where she would appear in the morning for the girls.  Here are some of Crystal’s adventures at our house last Christmas.

Elf on the shelf collage 1a (800x800)

As you can see, Crystal loved to hang out with my daughter’s toys!

Elf on the shelf collage 2a (800x800)

She also had a knack of appearing with our Christmas decorations and ornaments…..oh and once, she got into my pearls on my dressing table.  Crystal is definitely a diva elf! 😉

Elf on the shelf Collage 3a (800x800)

I will probably repeat a few of these ideas this month, but I definitely want some more creative adventures for Crystal to get into….and of course, amuse my daughters throughout December.  So I created a Pinterest board called Elf on the Shelf Ideas, and I definitely want to use some  of these clever ideas.  You can find the individual pictures with the link/sources on my board.  There are so many wonderful creative ideas out there!  I really can’t wait!!  I’m just a big kid when it comes to Christmas and all the excitement! 🙂

So, have you started getting ready for the holidays? Do you have an elf on the shelf for your family?  If so, please share some of your creative ideas as to how your Elf shows up every morning!

Turning my Camper into a Glamper – Part 2: The Vision

Hey Blog Friends,

By now most of you have seen the before pictures of my camper (if you haven’t seen the horror – than click here.)  So today I wanted to share with you my vision for the “glamper”.  One of the most important things that I was looking forward to changing was the depressing beige-brown walls.  But since camper walls are very different from the walls in your home, I needed to ensure that the thin papery walls could be painted with regular paint. That’s when I started my research on the internet and of course Pinterest.  I started a board called Camper to Glamper and began pinning images of all the amazing camper transformations I found out on the blogosphere. Here are just a few images that totally inspired me!

5th wheel camper makeover

This missionary couple that blogs about their missionary life from the blog States to Sudan renovated their 5th Wheel camper in 2012 and it looks fantastic….the kitchen was painted white and the walls a very light grey.  I just loved how airy and light the camper looked versus the before pictures and it was the exact same look I wanted my camper to have.

twobertis wordpress

The blog Two Berti’s chronicled the before and after renovation of their parents camper – again so light and bright.  And I love the flooring.  Good bye ugly brown vinyl flooring and carpeting!

cat-arzyna blogspot

I also really liked the vintage vibe of this camper — although that’s not the look I am going for.  Again I loved the bleached wood flooring and its overall charm.  See the rest of this camper here.  She calls it her cottage on wheels….which is ironic because besides nick-naming our camper ‘the glamper,’ I also call it our summer home on wheels.  Anything goes except trailer — I hate that word.

I really loved how the ‘master bedroom’ turned out in this camper — and you know what theme I am going for — light and bright…..and this camper has got it.  Check out the rest of the renovation here!

Now let`s get to my vision for our `camper to glamper` reno.  Of course it’s going to be light and bright with lots of nautical blue accents to break up all the white. However, my husband & I don’t want to spend a ton of money on this renovation so you will notice that most furnishings are from Ikea Canada because they have fabulous funky furniture that is well priced.  I am also using fabric shower curtains on most windows because they are cheaper than drapery panels AND look amazing!  I did splurge on a few items, like the vinyl flooring, custom drapery in the girl’s room, and Peel & stick wallpaper for 2 accent walls.  I am so excited to see this renovation completed so I can really begin enjoying my summer.

So now that you pretty much understand what I am trying to accomplish in my camper renovation, let me take you through my vision board for the main area of the camper.

Glamper Vision Board

  1. Kitchen Table – Ingatorp Drop Leaf Table in White from Ikea Canada — a great space saver
  2. Nils Stools in White – so adorable and they fit nicely underneath the table….more space saving!
  3. The entire camper (walls & cabinets) will be painted in White Dove OC-17 by Benjamin Moore – so bright….this is my new favourite white.
  4. Love the concept of restickable wallpaper. This is from a company called Simple Shapes based out of New Jersey.  Look at the little blue birds….dying to see it how it looks on my 2 narrow accent walls.
  5. Fun toss cushions in navy & white that express exactly how I am feel when I am up at the camper.  These 2 are from Indigo.
  6. This navy & white striped nautical looking fabric is actually a fabric shower curtain from Target Canada! Yes, I can`t believe it either.  The remaining 2 fabrics, Swell & Starfish, both in navy, are from Tonic Living and will be used to reupholster a few things in the camper — a future post – I promise.
  7. Cute pendant light – Kvartar from Ikea –  I am considering for over the dining table or over my bed.
  8. So excited about the flooring going down in the camper.  It’s a beautiful vinyl in Silverwood Oak….it`s going to look stunning against the white walls.
  9. Cozy navy throw from Indigo that will look great tossed over one of the wicker chairs, which leads me to
  10. Love, Love, Loving these wicker chairs (x2) from Ikea Canada that will take the place of the god-awful looking sofa we have in the ‘living room’

Hope you love the vision of my Glamper as much as I do.  Stay tuned for my next post that is all about Dove White!!

Glamorously yours,

My 2014 Mantra

Hello my dearest Blog Friends,

Today, January 7th marks the beginning of 2014 for me, Decor by Christine and this blog.  Prior to this, I was still in holiday mode with the girls.  It should have started yesterday but I wasn’t feeling well, so today it is!  Apparently yesterday, January 6th or the first day back at work after the holidays is the most depressing day of the year….so maybe that’s why I wasn’t feeling well.  Well, we can’t have any of that anymore, can we?  So without further ado, let’s jump into what I call my mantras for 2014.

I don’t do resolutions — because I always break them or never keep them.  But a mantra — see definition below — is something I can almost beat my own drum to.  Does that make sense?

Definition of the word Mantra

1. (in Hinduism and Buddhism) a sacred word or formula repeated as an incantation.

2. any often repeated word, formula, or stock phrase; slogan.

Also, within the blogosphere, many bloggers have come up with a word for 2014 or even a song.  I’ve never done this so I decided this year I will.  So drum roll please……..

My one word for 2014 is

(I can’t find the source for this….but it was pinned from Pinterest)

I found that in 2013, I always had the best intentions of doing this or that.  For example, putting together an  Operations Manual for Decor by Christine which has been on the back-burner for over 6 months; or updating the Portfolio section on my website — because Houzz just became so convenient for viewing it; and last, personal home decor projects that I  have been talking about for a year and have not yet completed — soooo frustrating!  And so not good! This year, it’s all about ACTION!!  The poster above says it perfectly!!

Source: http://www.pinterest.com/vaniasiles/

The song I chose – for right now….because I can guarantee it will change throughout 2014 –  is ROAR by Katy Perry.  Love the lyrics and what they stand for.  My one-person design company, Decor by Christine (DbC) is turning 5 this month….and I have been very lucky with all that I have accomplished these last 5 years – basically doing it all by my lonesome and working with some amazing clients and design colleagues.  But this year I must come out roaring and take DbC to the next level…and that includes this little old blog I affectionately call The Glam Blog.

Last week, I was reading one of my favourite new blogs called The Glitter Guide and saw this great post on 2014 resolutions that I just had to share with you.  However because I dislike the word resolutions…..we will call them 2014 mantras instead.

I can’t even say I have one favourite out of these 12 mantras….each one is equally important to me.  What I love about this list is that it really echos some of the changes I want for 2014.  And of course, there is glitter involved also! 😆

Here’s another mantra that I hope will resonate with you as much as it did with me – also from The Glitter Guide blog.

I think fear really holds me back sometimes from doing things – whether its fear from making a mistake, looking like an idiot, afraid I can’t do it or think only people younger than me can do it — I really need to just get over it….and take ACTION!

And the last mantra I want to share with you really hit home with me, probably because it links back to being fearful.  This industry — whether its being an interior designer or a design blogger can be fiercely competitive, and sometimes you cannot help comparing yourself to others.  Well that has to stop!  And that’s why the words below bring a tear to my eye as I write this.  (I have to thank Jen from Rambling Reno Blog for sharing this on her blog.)

I may not have thousands of followers on this blog — I’m lucky if I write twice a week — and that’s probably not going to change, or have clients with a million dollar budget — although I will continue to work towards that goal — I do have a wonderful close circle of family and friends who keep me same and love me as I am.  So I will start to be better than I was yesterday….for me!!!

OMG!!  I’ve hit almost 700 words…yikes.  If you lasted to this point….I thank you with all my heart.  I have some exciting things happening in the 1st quarter of 2014 that I can’t wait to share with you.  But tell me…..do you have a mantra, word or song for 2014 that resonates with you?  I would love to hear all about it…so leave me a comment — I always respond back!!

Thanks for sticking with me.  Cheers to 2014 — Out with the old — in with the NEW!!

Glamorously yours in action,

Christine xoxo

Project Bunkie: Decor Inspiration Part 2

I can’t believe how fast August is flying by….and before you know it — Labour Day Weekend will be upon us!!  Tick Tock, Tick Tock!!   Arrrrrrrghhhhhhhh!!!!

Yes, I’m panicking because our original deadline was to have the Bunkie fully finished – inside & out —  for the Aug 25th  weekend….but sadly that is not happening. Sometimes you just can’t control Mother Nature – all that rain we got last week delayed our plan for staining the exterior.  This past weekend we worked on the interior of the Bunkie and will work our way outside by the end of this weekend.  So our little “guest cottage” will have to be unveiled over the long weekend.

In the meantime, let me show you some more great photos I found on Pinterest that is inspiring my decor theme and colour palette for the Bunkie.  Photos from Sarah’s Cottage have definitely influenced my colour scheme…and really all because of the drapery in this photo.

Sarah Richardson Design - Sarah's Cottage - West Guest Bedroom

I currently have similar striped sunbrella fabric drapery in my gazebo up at the “glamper”.  I have since taken them down to be laundered and eventually hung up on the 2 windows inside the Bunkie.  And voila, my colour palette has been born: Blue, lot of White, with hints of pale yellow and green!  I want it to have a bit of a “vintage – beachy – glam” vibe to it.  So you better believe it’s going to have a chandelier in it!

These following pictures also inspired my floor plan for this 10 x 12 space:

bunkie with a view

The main goal of getting our Bunkie was to create a little guest cottage that could comfortably sleep a family of four when friends come to visit.  So having a double bed and bunk beds is a must.  Similar to the Bunkie above.

bunkie beds

Love the whole look and feel of this bunk bed with a lower double bed.

Just Beachy Bunkie

I also really like the beachy vibe I get from this cute little Bunkie.

cabin bunkie look!

We are installing bead board panels on the walls and will be staining it white — so it will look similar to this picture. So excited to show you the final result!!

Fun quilts for the bunkie

Pinned via web from Source

These quilts are super fun…but unfortunately I don’t have any and neither does my mom.  Hoping to find some while I scour some antique markets in the next few weeks.

And last but not least is the floor plan I created that should fit a family of 4 comfortably. I will get into more detail about the floor plan in my next blog post along with pictures of the cutest little Bunkie you ever saw!! (but I’m biased of course!) Winking smileCasa Da Costa – Seaton will soon be open!!

My little Bunkie: Decor Inspiration!

Hi Everyone!  It feels like I have been on vacation forever, which I guess I sort of have been.  Although it hasn’t been all fun and games!!  My exciting news is that we bought a 10 x 12 Bunkie that we are currently decorating into a little guest cottage where we have our “summer home.”

To get my creative juices flowing I started a “Bunkie Decor Inspiration Board” on Pinterest.  Here are some bunkies that I fell in love with:

Ah! Summer is coming!

love the exterior of this Bunkie

Backyard Retreat

This last one inspired me into deciding how I would paint the exterior of the Bunkie.   I’m loving the blue with white trim.  Isn’t it adorable.

stunning exterior to this bunkie

So in case you are wondering, this is what my little Bunkie looks like except ours will only have one door versus two.

Saltbox poolside bunkie

In my next post I will share with you how I want to decorate it on the inside.

What do you think of my summer decorating project?  Leave me a comment and let me know.

Camping in style!!

My family and I don’t tent camp anymore.  We have graduated to our 3rd camper since we started glamping 10 years ago.  If you have seen the inside of a camper then you know that the decor is pretty bland & beige.  My June/July project is updating the decor of our new 37 ft. camper…so stay tuned for a future blog post about this.  In the meantime, below are some absolutely fabulous campers that have been revamped inside!!  How glam!!

Total Glamping!!!

Love this girly feminine vintage camper….and take a look at the inside!!

And just a few more to whet your appetite for glamping with style in a camper!!

Decorate as You Dress! Mint Green Obsession!

Hi Everyone,

Lately I have been obsessed with mint green in both fashion and home decor.  To the point where I just got my nails painted in this lovely hue!

I also started a board on Pinterest highlighting everything I love in fashion and home decor in Mint Green.  You can follow my board here if you have an account.

In the meantime, here are some glorious images of this fresh colour to inspire you to add some mint green to your closet or home decor this spring!!

The current issue of House Beautiful is all about green!! Love that stunning chair!

The fashion runways for spring 2012 also showed a lot of mint green.  However, this colour has been popular for many years now as seen in the gorgeous Haute Couture gown by Elie Saab  from her spring 2010 collection.  So there really is no need to be fearful of adding this colour into your closet or a few toss cushions!!

Now let’s look at some interior design highlighting mint green in all its glory!!

Gorgeous mint green walls!!

Room design by Nick Olsen

How about a mint green kitchen??

If that is too much for you, then how about some mint green pieces for the room:  Like this vintage green fridge by SMEG! FUN!

A simple green chair can also make quite the impact!

I’m loving how fun this mint green vintage tub looks in this bathroom!

How about a quick DIY: Grab some mint green paint and freshen up your bookshelf for spring! (don’t you love how the shelves were styled also!)

I absolutely adore the look of this room.  Imagine a sea-side cottage and you’ve got this gorgeous room.  I love the mint green grass cloth wallpaper and accessories.  Red heart!!

Here’s a sneak peak into my family room.  The wall colour is called Sea Haze / BM 2137-50 and depending on the light it can look like sea foam.  I really love this colour by Benjamin Moore because it changes to so many colours throughout the day!  Highly recommend it!!

And last but not least, I couldn’t resist including these vision boards I found on Pinterest – they basically say it all!!  I love Mint Green!!

So are you obsessed with Mint Green now….I hope so, because you will be seeing a lot of it this spring!!  Have a great day!!
