Using Pop-Art in a kids room

Fall means getting organized and making to-do lists of the decorating projects you want to complete this season – especially before Christmas.  One of the items on my decorating to-do list was hanging up artwork in both my daughters’ bedrooms.  But not just any artwork – I want artwork that is fun and personalized to their personalities.  When I showed them the concept of Pop-art , they got all excited and yelled YES!  What company does Pop-art the best with your own images?  Well, that would be Posterjack of course.  And I knew this would be my next #12PrintsProject blog post.

Pop-Art Example #1

My oldest daughter is 13 yrs old and is always playing around with different apps on her phone.  She had taken this really funky photo of her lips and had added some colour to it and it really did look like art when she was finished with it.  I told her to save that photo because I had an idea how to turn that “selfie“ into art through the special effect of Pop-art on canvas.  And voila, I think it turned out fabulous.

The following images were all taken on my iPhone, so excuse the quality or glare from the light coming through the windows.

She is in French Immersion so I had purchased a few gold foil prints with french sayings and I think her tiny gallery wall frames her pop-art lip canvas print perfectly.

And here`s a close-up! I`m so pleased with the result and Mackenzie is very happy with her gallery wall.

Pop-Art Example #2

Now, my 8 yr old daughter is a competitive dancer and we thought it was high time that she have a dedicated spot in her room to showcase pictures of her dancing in various competitions alongside trophies & plaques she has won.  I chose a fun picture from her hip-hop routine last season and re-invented it into Pop-art.  It`s the focal point amongst photos of her dancing on stage and we left some space to hang more plaques as she wins them,

I like how her dancer art wall is above her toy storage where she has begun showcasing her competitive trophies.  I also had to add her first tiny pair of tap shoes as a prop.

It`s so easy to create your own version of pop-art.  Once you upload your photo onto Posterjack`s website and specify the size and format you want, under special effects choose pop-art and it will show you an example of how your image will look.  Easy-peasy.  What child doesn’t want to see their face created into personalized artwork.

And what an easy fall decorating project this could be for you.  Happy decorating!

My little Bunkie: Decor Inspiration!

Hi Everyone!  It feels like I have been on vacation forever, which I guess I sort of have been.  Although it hasn’t been all fun and games!!  My exciting news is that we bought a 10 x 12 Bunkie that we are currently decorating into a little guest cottage where we have our “summer home.”

To get my creative juices flowing I started a “Bunkie Decor Inspiration Board” on Pinterest.  Here are some bunkies that I fell in love with:

Ah! Summer is coming!

Backyard Retreat

This last one inspired me into deciding how I would paint the exterior of the Bunkie.   I’m loving the blue with white trim.  Isn’t it adorable.

So in case you are wondering, this is what my little Bunkie looks like except ours will only have one door versus two.

In my next post I will share with you how I want to decorate it on the inside.

What do you think of my summer decorating project?  Leave me a comment and let me know.

What Are Your Decorating Projects for 2012?

Happy New Year Everyone!!  Now that we are almost one week into 2012 have you started to think about what you want to accomplish with your home decor this year?

Well, I definitely have! Besides finishing up a some client projects and continuing to write my What’s Trending column for Dabble Magazine, I have a few personal home decor projects that I have been putting off because 2011 was a busy year for me.

The 6 projects I want to start or complete are:

–  Converting my master bedroom retreat into a ‘glam cave’

– Purchasing a few furniture/accessories for the master bedroom to finish off the room

–  Revamping my home office a bit

– Finish decorating my 2 daughters’ bedrooms

– Converting my daughters’ playroom into a homework room

So here’s a sneak peak into some of the rooms and how they look right now:

This is my retreat that is right off of my master bedroom and it is boring with a capital B!!

IMG_5249

Right now we only use it for watching TV some nights when the girls are in bed.  The only things that are staying is my leopard print chaise because it is oh so glam!  And my capize shell chandelier because it is stunning.  My husband doesn’t know it yet but his god-awful recliner is so outta there!!

IMG_5250

The TV and the stand will stay of course – but those speakers and clutter on the floor are gone!!

IMG_5251

When I’m done it will be a purple passion glam cave with a stunning desk and chair, lighting and dramatic wallpaper!!

Next room to revamp is the kids playroom on the second floor.  When we bought/built this home it had a nook on the second floor called the ‘homework room.’  But we made it into a small playroom for the girls to play in.

IMG_5248

When I’m done with this room room it will have 2 side by side desks, an art wall one one side and a chalkboard wall on the other side with lots of shelves and storage.  I also found the cutest wallpaper for the main feature wall.  It’s going to look fabulous!

IMG_5246

My oldest daughter’s room is another room that needs to be updated.  Her current colour scheme is black/white & pink which will stay the same.  When she’s a bit older I will paint out the pink walls.

IMG_1625

Mackenzie is going to get a new double bed with a  headboard that I am designing for her.  And of course, new bedding.

IMG_1626

This little table & chairs is going to the basement but the shelf will stay

IMG_1627

That bare pink wall will be full of pictures – probably a gallery wall of her competing at horse shows since she is a budding equestrian.  Also her dresser will move to this wall and she will need a funky mirror on the wall.

IMG_5234

Her black velvet chandelier is definitely staying.  When I purchased this glamorous piece it was because it was a piece that would grow with her – it’s not juvenile at all.

IMG_5232

The Candice Olsen wallpaper called “Daisy” on the feature wall will remain.  I love this wallpaper so much, and again it is something that can grow with her into her teen years.  Her funky Homesense lamps will also stay!

IMG_5238

The bookshelf will stay but I want to style the shelves and get rid of most of those stuffies.  I’m also planning on doing a DIY project above the shelf to hang all the ribbons she has won so far participating in the horse shows.  And of course her window seat will remain.

IMG_5236

The last project I will highlight today is the bedroom of my youngest daughter Mya.

IMG_1624

Over 2 years ago the crib above converted into the daybed below.  But now she to big for it and needs her own twin bed.  Which she will get when her sister gets a new double bed.  Now that’s what I call recycling!  Smile

IMG_5225

Mya’s room decor is light pink with chocolate accents – which will stay the same except I’m going to add some orange accents through wallpaper and some accessories. Also her beautiful rose chandelier will remain….that piece will grow with her.

IMG_5226

Because a twin bed will be coming into this room the layout will change.  That rocker will also be heading to the basement to donate.  (I have lots of fond (and not so fond) memories of nursing both babies in that rocker).IMG_5228

I’m going to keep this adorable bookshelf just change its location.  The shelf will also remain.

IMG_5230

Her change table which became a dresser in the short-term will be donated and she will get a big girl’s dresser.  The armoire will go to the basement but I will keep it.  It’s a beautiful piece that I will eventually paint out and keep for one of the girls or use in our future cottage.

IMG_5227

Mya’s room has a cathedral ceiling so she has great natural light coming from her 3 large windows – although with this dark picture you wouldn’t think so!!  I’m going to add some architectural detail to the other walls by adding paneled moulding and wallpapering inside the panels.  It should look amazing when its done..

Okay, that’s it for now.  I’m exhausted just looking at what I need to accomplish in the new few months.  My office will have to wait for another post.

So tell me, what decorating projects will you be working on in 2012?

Glamorously yours,

Christine xoxo

Decorate as You Dress — My Pink Dress

Today’s Decorate as You Dress is going to feature the Pink Dress I wore to the Dabble Launch Party 2 weeks ago (if you missed it, you can read all about the party here)Lisa Canning & I at Dabble Launch Party

Pantone named Honeysuckle Pink as the Colour of the Year for 2011.  I think the colour pink looks stunning in fashion – that’s why I bought this dress of course – but now let’s see how it we can use this colour in decorating a room!!

Think Pink! Decorating with Honeysuckle

Photo Source Room Design by  Natalie Umbert

So here we have very glamorous pink walls in a very clean, classic looking living room.  I love it…..it looks very chic without getting all cutesy.

Think Pink! Decorating with Honeysuckle

Or why not consider using it in a wallpaper like this lovely Pink Damask wallpaper (Wallpaper: Julie Damask in Raspberry T4764 from the Gatehouse Collection at Thibaut) in an otherwise neutral room.  Apparently a pinkish glow is the most flattering light by which to dine.

If putting it on your walls is just to bit much for you, than why not do what Sarah and Tommy did in the first episode of Sarah 101  and instead go for a sofa in striking pink or as below use it on  dining room chairs for instant impact!!

Pink isn’t just for little girls’ rooms either. Pink bedding can look very sophisticated when combined with raspberry, tangerine and crisp, bright white.  (Wallpaper and fabric, “Ecuador in Pink” (T9251) from the Avalon Collection at Thibaut)

And if all else fails, than go for a simple but dazzling accent cushion in hot pink that you can use to accessorize a sofa, chair or bedroom.  It will definitely add that shot of colour that every home craves after a long cold winter!!

I love pink…..I have many pink articles of clothing in my closet but also in my decor! On the second floor of my home, we have what I like to call “The Pink Wing” where the 2 rooms of my daughters are situated along with the laundry room.  All 3 rooms are painted pink.  YES – even the laundry room is AND it has a chandelier with lots of bling on it.  Cause hey, if I’m going to do laundry than I want the room to inspire me!  Flirt female  I will be unveiling these rooms on my blog in the near future!!  So will you think PINK this spring??

Have a fabulously glamorous week!!
