One Room Challenge – ManCave Garage – Week 3

Who knew there would be so many decisions to be made for my husband’s mancave garage transformation.  Yes folks, its time for another One Room Challenge Week 3 update!  And this week it was all about making decisions on the flooring, cabinetry, backsplash, countertop and wall colour – you would think we were renovating a kitchen.  But no, its our Mancave Garage!   So let’s get to it!

Here’s a quick reminder of the 3D floorplan that we approved last week:

Now let’s get into the options:

Flooring Option

Garage Living, the company we chose to update our garage is known for their Rhino Polyaspartic Coating made specifically for garage concrete floors.  Without boring you with all the technical jargon or application process, basically the benefits of going with this type of flooring is 3-fold:

  • Its Dust free, odor free and easy-to-clean…..key when this is also a mancave
  • It’s Chemical and abrasion resistant — important for a garage that will house paint, chemicals etc.
  • And its pretty looking – which is important to me 😉

In addition, its guaranteed not to flake, peel or blister and as mentioned, is resistant against any car or household chemicals, including oil, grease, gas, paint, salt, mud, etc.  The coating is also UV stable ensuring a clear long-lasting shine that will not amber or blush overtime — so no fading.

So what we really needed to decide on was the colour we wanted to go with.  Garage Living has 15 colours to choose from.  We didn’t want to go too dark or so light that it ended up looking like a hospital room.  These were the final 4 options we decided on.  (Mind you….this picture does not do the samples justice…they appear a lot darker than they really are).

garage flooring Colour Options - Decor by Christine

We ended up choosing QuickSilver as it had lovely specks of light & dark grey with hits of white which coincided with our………

Wall Colour Options:

As part of the Garage Living installation they paint all the walls and ceiling whatever colour we want.  We chose to go light and bright so the mancave doesn’t feel like a dungeon….since Sean will be out there a lot – especially when he misbehaves….LOL! 🙂  We narrowed it down to Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace OC65 and White Diamond OC61

In the end we chose to go with Chantilly lace.  We liked the way it looked against the QuickSilver coloured flooring vs White Diamond which has grey undertones…something I wanted to avoid on the walls since there is quite a bit of grey in the flooring.

The sky is the limit for cabinetry selection especially if budget is not a consideration.  Garage Living’s modular cabinetry can be configured to meet your needs, space and budget.  All components are powder coated, welded steel construction with magnetic door latches, lockable tool drawers and large sports equipment lockers. We chose their Signature collection…..this is what the exterior of the cabinets & slats look like in the colour we chose.  The slats will be placed on the side of the garage where the car lift will be installed.  Here the bikes and any large tools can be hung.

Countertop & Backsplash

For the countertop we had the choice of going with stainless steel for a real industrial look or maple butcher block that gave it a bit more of a laid back look.  In the end we chose to go with the maple butcher block because we found out that the stainless steel countertop easily scratched a lot and my husband intends on using the countertop quite a bit — especially when he is roasting his coffee beans (don’t ask…..this is another blog post).  The butcher block also looks a bit rustic.  To make up for not having a stainless steel countertop, Sean chose the stainless steel diamond plate backsplash.  So it was a nice compromise.  Below is an example of how our 2 choices will look together. BTW:  all these images I have shared all can be found on the garage living website.

So now you know what I mean when I said I couldn’t believe all the decor decisions to be made to transition our garage into a fabulous mancave garage!  Here is a quick summary of the decor choices we made this week!

Organizing your desktop – Office decor you need now!

Happy Friday!  I can’t believe that the month of January ends tomorrow — it just flew by!  This month at my house has been hectic.  Christmas decorations went “bye bye” on the 3rd, the girls went back to school the following week, my family room is being renovated and I started to get organized in my home office for 2015.  So let me take you through a quick timeline of my office redo project as it drives my top 12 office decor you need now for organizing your desktop.

Last fall I started redecorating my home office and its almost done.  First I got my built-in desk spray painted in Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17.  Forgive the quality of the images — these were all taken with my IPhone.

Office Desk

Then I got my office walls painted also in White Dove for a seamless look but added a feature wall in black and white stripes…..very ala Kate Spade.

Striped office wall

I did a quick Ikea Hack with the KALLAX shelving by adding doors and drawers for office organization and then added this fabulous gold lion head hardware which I also used for my build-in desk.

I then got my white Eiffel chairs spraypainted gold for some additional glam. My motto is “All Gold, All the Time.”

Had Tonic Living create a window valance for me in this delicious dalmation dot fabric trimmed with hot pink ribbon — the accent colour in my new office.

I did a quick DIY with my corkboard and recovered it in the matching dalmation print fabric that is on my new window valance.  I also added some antique brass studs and pink ribbon that matches the valance for some added glam.

See the ugly brown corkboard from the 1st image above……well this is how it looks now!  Happy Dance!

Then I started having fun decorating my desktop.

And now I finally get to the point of today’s blog post!  Below are my top 12 favourite items to help keep you organized for 2015 and help make your desk look pretty at the same time.  And its pretty obvious that my favourites all lean towards the new colour scheme of my office – Black and white stripes, polka dots, pink and lots of gold!

Office Decor You Need Now 2015

1) Ikea RANARP light Love this lamp!  I added a pretty pink magnetic flower to dress it up!  2) 3) 7 – 12) All items from Indigo — they have the best office accessories & décor from Kate Spade to their own private label cute pens and file folders.  4 – 6) All items from Target Canada — I think everyone has a pair of these gold scissors from Nate Berkus.  Love my gold dachshund tape dispenser and these black & white striped binders are the best for keeping client projects organized.

Project Pink & Orange: Homework Room Update!!

It’s finally happening!!  The Homework Room is finally getting completed!  I literally put it on hold last winter/spring as I was busy with client projects (which is always a good thing).  Then once the summer hit, we were too busy working on Project Dollhouse AKA the Bunkie.

You can catch up on my plans for the homework room here.  The star of the room is going to be this wallpaper my daughters and I chose from  Printers Guild Productions

Homework room inspiration

The wallpaper will only be on one wall, so I had to decide what colour to paint the remaining 2.5 walls.  And of course this gorgeous wallpaper gave me 3 vibrant colour choices: Orange, Lilac or Raspberry.

The girls and I nixed the lilac…so now it was down to the orange or the raspberry / pink grapefruit flower as our colour inspiration.

I headed to my local Benjamin Moore Paint store and picked up 2 tester samples of Calypso Orange BM2015-30 and BM2008-30 Raspberry Blush to try on the walls next to the paper.

The minute I brushed the Calypso Orange onto the wall I knew it was the wrong choice…even with a 2nd coat (which I didn’t bother to do) I knew it would be too much for the room.

So I decided to go with Raspberry Blush.  I was so excited about it that I tweeted out my colour choice to Benjamin Moore….and below is their response.

And here is the vision board I created for the Homework Room via Olioboard to give you a brief look at the look of the room that I want to achieve.

Stay tuned for the next update!!

Decorate As You Dress: Turquoise & Orange!!

I have loved the colour combination of orange (whether you call it tangerine, citrus or coral) and blue (turquoise & teal especially) for many years now, and it is still going strong.  So for this month’s nail colour I decided to honour my adoration for these 2 colours.

I also made my first official DIY canvas art using this fresh colour combo – highlighting another love of mine – chevron — this time last year.  And it is still in my family room on display!

In my family room I have 2 bold orange occasional chairs that I had custom made 4 years ago.  Who knew that orange would be so hot 4 yrs later!! Yay me!!  My walls are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Rain Dance colour .

Yesterday my friend Leigh-Ann Allaire was on Cityline showing her DIY outdoor cushions in this colour combo.  You can watch the episode here.

If you are thinking about adding this oh so classic colour combo into your home, then here are some ideas to get you going!

A bold orange sofa will make quite the statement in a room, especially when accented with hits of teal blue.

For the home / living rooms - orange blue Orange, blue and cream living room with simple accen

Or course orange walls will always spice up a room!

Even More Orange and Blue Rooms

This neutral living room gets its VA VA voom from the light blue walls and the orange accessories and cushions. Subtle but bang on!

Decorate as You Dress! Mint Green Obsession!

Hi Everyone,

Lately I have been obsessed with mint green in both fashion and home decor.  To the point where I just got my nails painted in this lovely hue!

I also started a board on Pinterest highlighting everything I love in fashion and home decor in Mint Green.  You can follow my board here if you have an account.

In the meantime, here are some glorious images of this fresh colour to inspire you to add some mint green to your closet or home decor this spring!!

The current issue of House Beautiful is all about green!! Love that stunning chair!

The fashion runways for spring 2012 also showed a lot of mint green.  However, this colour has been popular for many years now as seen in the gorgeous Haute Couture gown by Elie Saab  from her spring 2010 collection.  So there really is no need to be fearful of adding this colour into your closet or a few toss cushions!!

Now let’s look at some interior design highlighting mint green in all its glory!!

Gorgeous mint green walls!!

Room design by Nick Olsen

How about a mint green kitchen??

If that is too much for you, then how about some mint green pieces for the room:  Like this vintage green fridge by SMEG! FUN!

A simple green chair can also make quite the impact!

I’m loving how fun this mint green vintage tub looks in this bathroom!

How about a quick DIY: Grab some mint green paint and freshen up your bookshelf for spring! (don’t you love how the shelves were styled also!)

I absolutely adore the look of this room.  Imagine a sea-side cottage and you’ve got this gorgeous room.  I love the mint green grass cloth wallpaper and accessories.  Red heart!!

Here’s a sneak peak into my family room.  The wall colour is called Sea Haze / BM 2137-50 and depending on the light it can look like sea foam.  I really love this colour by Benjamin Moore because it changes to so many colours throughout the day!  Highly recommend it!!

And last but not least, I couldn’t resist including these vision boards I found on Pinterest – they basically say it all!!  I love Mint Green!!

So are you obsessed with Mint Green now….I hope so, because you will be seeing a lot of it this spring!!  Have a great day!!

Decorate As You Dress: Tangerine Tango!!

This is the first “Decorate As You Dress” blog post of the year and I thought why not start it off with Pantone’s 2012 Colour of the year:  Tangerine Tango!!

“Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

Now let’s take a look at how you can incorporate this vivacious colour into your wardrobe or home decor:

I absolutely adore this spring coat as much as I adore this headboard.  Now that’s the way to add some POP into your room!!

On the other hand, this kitchen is definitely over the top orange which is something I would NOT recommend doing in your home but I would definitely wear that cute orange outfit above.

Pops of orange like these counter stools or the dining room chairs below is a much palatable way to go with decorating your home in this hue!  And used with whites is a sure-fire way to garner positive attention.

Definitely much more refined looking when such a bright colour is used as more of an accent!

But if you want to stop traffic at your next gala event, then this gown is the way to go!!!  STUNNING!!

And just as stunning is this front door.  What a way to welcome guests to your home!

I’m actually coveting this glorious wallpaper along with these oh so glam Steve Madden shoes!!!  Be still my beating heart!!

In case you want to run out and paint a feature wall in this colour, Benjamin Moore has a similar colour called Tangerine Melt CC-091.

If I have inspired you to incorporate this wonderful colour into your home or closet, here are a few tips:

1)   This hue is magical when used as an accent against a neutral background, especially with greys!

2) Don’t be afraid to use in colour combinations such as blue & orange or pink & orange!

Wow, I love this glamorous girly look for my Glam Cave!!

3)  Don’t be shy about incorporating this colour into your wardrobe or home decor…start off small, then go from there!

Like this or like this……

4)  This colour is not for everyone so if it doesn’t suit your skin tone or you absolutely hate anything orange in your home, then DON”T DO IT!!  Instead try Benjamin Moore’s 2012 colour of the year: Wythe Blue (HC-143).  I’ll blog about this colour later this week.image

So tell me….are you ready to tango with the tangerine?

If you want to know how to decorate your home for 2012, then contact me online or via twitter…I’d love to help!

Glamorously yours,

Christine xoxo

Lee Ann’s Kitchen Reno: Part 5 – The Kitchen begins to take life!!

It’s been a white since I’ve updated you on Lee Ann’s Kitchen reno and lots has been happening!!

If you recall, Lee Ann donated her kitchen to our local chapter of Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore.  You can read the post here as a refresher.

Once the kitchen was cleared, my contractor came in and started rebuilding the walls and removing useless bulkheads on the ceiling.

Lee Ann also desperately needed proper lighting in her new kitchen so a new lighting plan was created.  We added 10 pot lights to her new kitchen layout.

And a few days later, this naked kitchen slowly started to get clothed with a fabulous new floor!!

The flooring goes out into the hallway all the way to the front door.  I’m so happy the way it turned out.  But that’s not all…..a few days later my  contractor came in and installed all the upper & lower cabinets!!  Soooo exciting!!  Are you ready!!!!

I love how the uppers go all all the way to the ceiling finished with a lovely crown moulding.  Cupboards were painted in Benjamin Moore’s CC-80 Grey Mist.

If you remember from Lee Ann’s old kitchen (click here for a refresher) her stove used to be right by the doorway into the kitchen.  Now we have the stove framed by 2 sets of mini pot drawers.  What a huge difference!!  And so much more functional with lots more storage!!

And I turned Lee Ann’s old eating area into a more functional space by adding in a much needed pantry and a new desk area for Lee Ann to check her email or pay bills.  And how apropos is it that her new desk is adjacent to her new wine fridge. Winking smileSee that box on the floor above – inside is the gorgeous new faucet that the folks at Delta generously supplied to Lee Ann!!

Apparently Lee Ann couldn’t wait for the kitchen to be finished….she went right ahead and started displaying her wine glasses.  My kinda gal!!

You may have noticed that the countertop and backsplash are still missing.  Well, you’ll have to come back next week to see it all installed!! I’m also going to share the fabulous faucet that Delta provided for Lee Ann’s new kitchen and the old chair I “up-cycled” into total feminine kitchen glam!!

If your kitchen is craving a glamorous makeover, then contact me online or in person! I’d love to help!

Around the House with Cityline!

I’ve had the great pleasure of attending 3 Cityline show taping in the past and I always have such fun, and tomorrow (January 10th) will be my fourth time being in the audience.  My new great friend Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault invited me and 3 other Design Bloggers to attend the show and cheer her on in the 2 decor segments she was being featured in.

Cityline gals

That’s Sarah, Me, Christine and Ana in the Green Room before the show

Anyway, there are 3 things that I love about Cityline:

1.  It’s 100% Canadian, taped daily in Toronto, Ontario

2.  It covers everything from Food, Fashion, Interior Design to Parenting and all the “experts” featured are Canadian!

3.  Tracy Moore, the host is gorgeous and so down to earth…she’s makes everyone in the audience feel included and very much part of the show.

Monday shows on Cityline are called “Around the House” and there is always a cooking segment and a home decor segment featured.

Leigh Ann’s home decor segment was all about how to get the ‘hotel look’ in your home on a budget…and wow, was it ever.  To get the “hotel look for less” Leigh Ann went to Moveline Liquidations – a Hotel & Office Furniture Liquidation Centre where you can find phenomenal deals on chairs, tables, desks, pictures and a whole lot more.

This is what Leigh Ann picked up from Moveline for her segment: a ratty old chair, desk and 4 framed pictures.

IMG_5203 to crop (2)

(sorry about the anorexic pic…but none of us thought to take a before picture so I had to be creative and crop) Embarrassed smile

But you will forgive me for that picture when you see the after….Voila:

How glam is that!!  It is definitely a GLAM SLAM in my book!!  It never ceases to amaze me what a good coat of paint and reupholstery in gorgeous fabric can do to older furniture with a good foundation!!  I’m not really a DIYer…I much prefer to create the vision and than have someone – an expert in that field – bring my vision to life.  And that is exactly what Leigh Ann did with this great example.  She sent the chair and desk to Paint It Like New in Burlington.  You can find the paint colours she used here!

Then she sent the chair to be reupholstered at Rewrap and voila, she now has 2 glamorous pieces of furniture for her home.

Wondering what Leigh Ann did with the framed pictures?  Well so was I.

She took just the frames and created panelled mouldings for the wall – how genius is that??!!.  Painted in the same colour as the wall gives the entire vignette a very chic and sophisticated look!!  Love it!!

If your decor budget doesn’t allow for you to go out and buy a funky cowhide rug, than fret no more. That cowhide rug in the pictures above was made by crafty Leigh Ann.  Her second segment is a demo on how to create a faux cowhide rug.  Genius x 2!!!

Also on the show was the one and only Bryan Baeumler, Host of "House of Bryan" and "Disaster DIY taking about.  He talked about how to avoid a Disaster DIY when working on a home reno.  He used Leigh Ann’s bathroom reno as an example of how it should be done!!  Bryan also officially introduced his newborn son Lincoln to everyone on Cityline….so adorable!!

Massimo Capra was also on the show cooking up a storm, along with the ladies from Sweet Potato Chronicles on how to easily add superfoods to your diet.

All in all, it was a fantastic show with lots of good learning and great people.

Now for some fun shots taken at the end of the show!

Unfortunately, we didn’t get a picture with Tracy because she had to run out to a Town hall meeting.  So here’s a picture of the 2 of us from a previous taping.

One last thing:  One of my dreams / goals is to one day actually appear in a decorating segment as part of the show versus the audience….keep your fingers crossed for me!!!  Send a kiss
