Decorating Big with GlamaMama: Refacing my Kitchen Intro Video

Happy July!
Besides working on a few client design projects this summer, I’m working on a few personal decor projects for myself. One of the projects is my camper to glamper complete reno happening now (Read Part one here). The other project is the refacing of my kitchen & redecorating my family room.

I’ve decided to video or vlog about the process on my YouTube channel via an online show called “Decorating Big with GlamaMama” – since one of my mottos is go big or go home – especially when it comes to decorating! And I’m not talking about the size of your sofa – I’m referring to your style! 😉

So here is the first video introducing you to my kitchen as it stands today, and all the things I want to change about it without going through a full costly renovation.

It’s kinda frivolous but it was lots of fun to do. Hope you enjoy it!

Can Laminate be Sexy?

A big resounding YES! to that question!

Not everyone has a big fat budget for a kitchen renovation, and lets face it, kitchen counter tops can a take a good chunk of that budget when you are looking at granite, marble or quartz. During my time at BlogtourVegas this past February, I got to meet another sponsor – the fine people at Formica, who specialize in kitchen countertops.

Below are 3 trends that totally revolutionize the way you will look at laminate countertops from here on in.

Trend 1:  Soft Stones Soft Stones feature subtle veining and lyrical movement down the length of the surface. The new Flow patterns ― 6699-46 Sand Flow and 6700-46 Lava Flow ― reflect this trend by featuring a fine granular sandstone design.

Lava Flow 2 (697x800)

Trend 2:  White Stones White Stones are commonly featured on kitchen islands, backsplashes and countertops and can be paired with other materials for a layered look. Two new laminate patterns address the White Stones trend: 6696-46 Carrara Bianco, an elegant white marble influenced by the popular 180fx® pattern Calacatta Marble, and 6697-46 Argento Romano, a gray-based neutral with taupe and beige accents that provides an alternative to pure white stone.

Argento Romano 1 (800x600) Luna Sail White FSS (600x800)

Trend 3:  Non-Traditional Materials As Millennials start to invest in kitchen and bath upgrades, they demonstrate individuality by experimenting with non-traditional materials such as wood, concrete and engineered stone.  The new Paloma series ― 6366-46 Paloma Dark Gray, 6729-46 Paloma Bisque and 6698-46 Paloma Polar ― provides clean, modern quartz-inspired looks ideal for any space.

Paloma Dark Grey 2 (600x800)

Black Walnut Timber 180fx with Ogee IdealEdge 1 (600x800)

Now look at these exotic granite patterns — Formica has totally captured the high-end look homeowners desire without sacrificing the maintenance-free and affordable nature of laminate.

Dolce Macchiato 180fx_ Bullnose IdealEdge 2 (800x531)

Magma Black 180fx 1 (800x600) River Gold 180fx 3 (800x600)

So I will ask you again…..can laminate be sexy?  I think you will now say YES!!

Glamorously yours,

#BlogTourVegas Sponsors

Hey Blog Friends,

The month of February just flew by and unfortunately I really haven’t had a chance to introduce you to ALL the incredible Modenus BlogtourVegas Sponsors I met while in Las Vegas last month.  Those pesky design clients just keep getting in the way of blogging — just kidding…..really I’m kidding ;-)!  However, I do promise to share all the wonderful products and companies I was introduced to during my incredible time with the team of #BlogTourVegas after March Break.

In the meantime, my latest What’s Trending column in the current Dabble Magazine issue has highlights of some of the trends and pretty new products that I saw coming out of the Kitchen & Bath Show  (KBIS) in kitchen and bathroom design with a few of the #BlogtourVegas sponsors.

What's Trending - KBIS

I’m off on a Disney Cruise with the family for March break. (yippee!!)  So upon my return, I will share with you more information about the following companies:

PoggenenPohl, Blanco, Top Knobs, Wood Mode, Formica, Deckton by Cosentino, Mr. Steam, Walker Zanger and last, but not least, SubZero-Wolf.

Hope you all have a wonderful March Break — in Canada it officially starts March 10th and I can’t wait to get away from all this snow!

Glamorously yours,

By the time you read this post tomorrow I will be on a plane heading to Las Vegas as part of #BlogTourVegas with Modenus!  And believe it or not, I am a Las Vegas virgin…..I have never been, and so I am really excited about seeing what everyone is talking about.  However, this trip is not about hitting up the casinos….it’s all about discovering all the fabulous Kitchen & Bath Design Trends that will be shown at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS).  And a few cocktails here and there!

All of the attendees for #BlogtourVegas 2014 will be staying at the super sexy Cosmopolitan Hotel.  My husband has stayed there and he says it is fabulous and you can almost see the entire Vegas strip from its location!  I’m thinking cocktails by the pool is a for-sure thing!!

I am there from Feb 2 – 6th and it is a jam-packed itinerary.  And to kick it off we will be participating in the first ever Modenus Talks — A series of talks and fun challenges around subjects like business of design, design trends, technology in design and design that makes a difference.  I am looking forward t hearing and learning from other design experts during this interactive afternoon of talking.

We will of course be meeting with all the wonderful sponsors of #BlogTourVegas and getting a sneak peek into whats new within the kitchen and bath industry.

Here’s just a sneak peek at some of the fabulous products from a few of the sponsors:

From BLANCO – cutting edge sinks & faucets

From Formica who make laminate counter tops.  Who knew that laminate could look this sexy – WOW!

TOTO  has luxury bathroom fixtures and fittings

These are just a few of the many sponsors I will be blogging about in the next couple of weeks.  Oh and did I mention that there would be a lot of cocktail parties to attend.  Can’t go to Vegas and NOT have a cocktail or two.  😆

I’m sure my feet will be killing  me by Thursday when I arrive back home but it will have been all worth it….I can predict that right now.  So stay tuned for some short & sweet blog posts in the next few days highlighting what I’ve seen so far in pictures!!   And follow me on instagram where you can see my #blogtourvegas pics in real time!!

See you soon!!

Decorate as You Dress! Mint Green Obsession!

Hi Everyone,

Lately I have been obsessed with mint green in both fashion and home decor.  To the point where I just got my nails painted in this lovely hue!

I also started a board on Pinterest highlighting everything I love in fashion and home decor in Mint Green.  You can follow my board here if you have an account.

In the meantime, here are some glorious images of this fresh colour to inspire you to add some mint green to your closet or home decor this spring!!

The current issue of House Beautiful is all about green!! Love that stunning chair!

The fashion runways for spring 2012 also showed a lot of mint green.  However, this colour has been popular for many years now as seen in the gorgeous Haute Couture gown by Elie Saab  from her spring 2010 collection.  So there really is no need to be fearful of adding this colour into your closet or a few toss cushions!!

Now let’s look at some interior design highlighting mint green in all its glory!!

Gorgeous mint green walls!!

Room design by Nick Olsen

How about a mint green kitchen??

If that is too much for you, then how about some mint green pieces for the room:  Like this vintage green fridge by SMEG! FUN!

A simple green chair can also make quite the impact!

I’m loving how fun this mint green vintage tub looks in this bathroom!

How about a quick DIY: Grab some mint green paint and freshen up your bookshelf for spring! (don’t you love how the shelves were styled also!)

I absolutely adore the look of this room.  Imagine a sea-side cottage and you’ve got this gorgeous room.  I love the mint green grass cloth wallpaper and accessories.  Red heart!!

Here’s a sneak peak into my family room.  The wall colour is called Sea Haze / BM 2137-50 and depending on the light it can look like sea foam.  I really love this colour by Benjamin Moore because it changes to so many colours throughout the day!  Highly recommend it!!

And last but not least, I couldn’t resist including these vision boards I found on Pinterest – they basically say it all!!  I love Mint Green!!

So are you obsessed with Mint Green now….I hope so, because you will be seeing a lot of it this spring!!  Have a great day!!

Decorate As You Dress: Tangerine Tango!!

This is the first “Decorate As You Dress” blog post of the year and I thought why not start it off with Pantone’s 2012 Colour of the year:  Tangerine Tango!!

“Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

Now let’s take a look at how you can incorporate this vivacious colour into your wardrobe or home decor:

I absolutely adore this spring coat as much as I adore this headboard.  Now that’s the way to add some POP into your room!!

On the other hand, this kitchen is definitely over the top orange which is something I would NOT recommend doing in your home but I would definitely wear that cute orange outfit above.

Pops of orange like these counter stools or the dining room chairs below is a much palatable way to go with decorating your home in this hue!  And used with whites is a sure-fire way to garner positive attention.

Definitely much more refined looking when such a bright colour is used as more of an accent!

But if you want to stop traffic at your next gala event, then this gown is the way to go!!!  STUNNING!!

And just as stunning is this front door.  What a way to welcome guests to your home!

I’m actually coveting this glorious wallpaper along with these oh so glam Steve Madden shoes!!!  Be still my beating heart!!

In case you want to run out and paint a feature wall in this colour, Benjamin Moore has a similar colour called Tangerine Melt CC-091.

If I have inspired you to incorporate this wonderful colour into your home or closet, here are a few tips:

1)   This hue is magical when used as an accent against a neutral background, especially with greys!

2) Don’t be afraid to use in colour combinations such as blue & orange or pink & orange!

Wow, I love this glamorous girly look for my Glam Cave!!

3)  Don’t be shy about incorporating this colour into your wardrobe or home decor…start off small, then go from there!

Like this or like this……

4)  This colour is not for everyone so if it doesn’t suit your skin tone or you absolutely hate anything orange in your home, then DON”T DO IT!!  Instead try Benjamin Moore’s 2012 colour of the year: Wythe Blue (HC-143).  I’ll blog about this colour later this week.image

So tell me….are you ready to tango with the tangerine?

If you want to know how to decorate your home for 2012, then contact me online or via twitter…I’d love to help!

Glamorously yours,

Christine xoxo

Glamour Friday: Big Brother 13 House Revealed

Are you one of those people who readily admit to watching Big Brother each summer or are you too embarrassed to admit it?  I’m the former and have been watching Big Brother since the first season.  Yea, I know….I’m hanging my head a bit sheepishly…but hey, it makes for great mindless entertainment! (insert irritating Rachel laugh here!)

So besides irritating houseguests and good strategic game, I do look forward to seeing how the producers change up the house decor each year.

This year the theme of the house is Venice Beach complete with fortune tellers, skateboards, graffiti and lots of bright bold colours. If you didn’t watch the first episode last night, here’s a peek into the house.

The kitchen:  I love the butcher block countertop mixed in with a stainless steel countertop in the breakfast bar area. You can see surfboards sticking out of the walls high above the sliding door.  And of course the large round dining table where many meals and  nominations will take place.  Note the bikes…very Venice beach….now we just need a board walk!

The layout of the kitchen hasn't changed since the previous season, but there are a few new features to point out: Butcher-block counters replace last year's blue Formica ones; a window (you can actually see out of and into the backyard) is next to the fridge; and 17 (not that we're counting!) surfboards protrude from the wall above the sliding glass doors.CBS/Sonja Flemming - Tuesday, June, 28, 2011, 12:28 AM

And of course, the BB13 living room where 2 guests to be nominated for eviction each week will sit.  They definitely brought the outside into the inside this season – note the outdoor furniture!

Big Brother 13 house – living room

I’m loving the colours of the lounge or parlour room (as CBS calls it).  A bold colour combination of purple and black and the checkerboard floors.  The large daybed will be perfect for strategizing against other players.  Oh, and the fortune teller is in the bottom left corner – very spooky!

Co-ed bathroom have never been my thing.  Just thinking of all those prying eyes on you makes me want to gag.  But I love the colour scheme and the flooring.

The HOH bedroom has a circular bed this year…very glam!!!  And I continue to adore the pairing of turquoise blue and orange in anything!!  I see a lot of West Elm and Crate And Barrel with smidges of Jonathan Adler’s ceramic animals in here.

Love the trellis-style wallpaper in the HOH bathroom – it’s much more striking in blue then it is in the brown in the photo above.  And I want that elephant!!

Wow…every time I look at this bedroom on the main floor I begin craving ice cream and dancing to Katy Perry’s hit song ‘California Girls’  — not surprising that it has been nicknamed the Katy Perry bedroom!

This other bedroom featuring 3 twin beds with stunning bent brushed steel was inspired by architect Frank Gehry.  Amazing…I love it!

The outside lounge area has gorgeous pops of colour – so vibrant and full of energy – perfect for dissing another housemate!  And it looks like they brought the inside furniture outside in this case.

The Venice Beach inspired graffiti wall.

Lee Ann’s Kitchen Reno: Part 6 – Adding Femininity via Up-cycling!

I will be revealing Lee Ann’s kitchen reno next week with the granite and backsplash installed, along with the awesome faucet Delta Canada provided for Lee Ann.  In the meantime, I wanted to show you a little up-cycling project I just completed for Lee Ann’s kitchen.

With all the hard lines of black, white and grey going on in Lee Ann’s kitchen, I really wanted to add some softness and texture to her kitchen.  And the easiest way to achieve softness is through fabric.  But since our budget was practically depleted, I decided to find a used chair in great condition for her small desk area.

If you are in the Toronto area, than you have probably heard of Moveline Hotel Liquidators – their products originate mainly from major hotel chains across North America.  Quality furnishings at fantastic prices.  This is the chair I purchased for Lee Ann.

Lee Ann Stranges-1

This is the fabric we chose to update the chair through Crown Wallpaper & Fabrics.  What do you think??

In addition, the legs of the chair were pretty banged up so I had them sanded down and painted a high gloss black.

And this is now the $55.00 chair!!!

I adore it and so does my client!!  I think it’s very glam, chic and feminine!  What do you think?

All that’s left is window treatments for the window by the sink to complete this kitchen reno.  Anyway, stay tuned for a look at the completed kitchen reno next week…..and my dilemma with this chair.

Lee Ann’s Kitchen Reno: Part 5 – The Kitchen begins to take life!!

It’s been a white since I’ve updated you on Lee Ann’s Kitchen reno and lots has been happening!!

If you recall, Lee Ann donated her kitchen to our local chapter of Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore.  You can read the post here as a refresher.

Once the kitchen was cleared, my contractor came in and started rebuilding the walls and removing useless bulkheads on the ceiling.

Lee Ann also desperately needed proper lighting in her new kitchen so a new lighting plan was created.  We added 10 pot lights to her new kitchen layout.

And a few days later, this naked kitchen slowly started to get clothed with a fabulous new floor!!

The flooring goes out into the hallway all the way to the front door.  I’m so happy the way it turned out.  But that’s not all…..a few days later my  contractor came in and installed all the upper & lower cabinets!!  Soooo exciting!!  Are you ready!!!!

I love how the uppers go all all the way to the ceiling finished with a lovely crown moulding.  Cupboards were painted in Benjamin Moore’s CC-80 Grey Mist.

If you remember from Lee Ann’s old kitchen (click here for a refresher) her stove used to be right by the doorway into the kitchen.  Now we have the stove framed by 2 sets of mini pot drawers.  What a huge difference!!  And so much more functional with lots more storage!!

And I turned Lee Ann’s old eating area into a more functional space by adding in a much needed pantry and a new desk area for Lee Ann to check her email or pay bills.  And how apropos is it that her new desk is adjacent to her new wine fridge. Winking smileSee that box on the floor above – inside is the gorgeous new faucet that the folks at Delta generously supplied to Lee Ann!!

Apparently Lee Ann couldn’t wait for the kitchen to be finished….she went right ahead and started displaying her wine glasses.  My kinda gal!!

You may have noticed that the countertop and backsplash are still missing.  Well, you’ll have to come back next week to see it all installed!! I’m also going to share the fabulous faucet that Delta provided for Lee Ann’s new kitchen and the old chair I “up-cycled” into total feminine kitchen glam!!

If your kitchen is craving a glamorous makeover, then contact me online or in person! I’d love to help!
